How to Choose a Biometric Attendance Machine: A Buyer's Guide
Share
The right attendance machine depends on six questions. Answer them in order and the shortlist almost writes itself.
1. Which credential suits your workforce?
Fingerprint machines are the most economical. Face recognition is touchless and faster at busy entrances, and works well for workers with worn or dusty fingers. Face + fingerprint devices give a backup credential. See face vs fingerprint.
2. How many users?
Check the device's fingerprint, face and card capacity against today's headcount plus growth, and its log (transaction) capacity against how often data is downloaded.
3. How will data leave the device?
USB download suits a single small office. TCP/IP connects to a PC or server. Wi-Fi helps where cabling is difficult. Cloud push (ADMS) sends punches to a cloud platform for multi-site HR. Read LAN, Wi-Fi or cloud.
4. Which software will you use?
Bundled software such as eSSL eTimeTrackLite covers single-site needs; SmartOffice, ZKBioTime or Matrix COSEC suit larger operations; existing HRMS users should plan an integration.
5. Do you need access control?
If the device must open a door, confirm it has a lock relay, exit-button and door-sensor inputs, and plan for a lock and power supply.
6. Where will it be installed?
Indoor, outdoor, near a turnstile or in a dusty factory? Plan power (adapter or UPS), network, lighting for face terminals and protective enclosures.
